Class actions are a scam!

November 9th, 2005

So, the Sony debacle continues, with a class action lawsuit (copy available here) on behalf of Californian consumers harmed by the anti-piracy measures on 20 Sony CDs (listed here).  Today will probably see a nationwide class action filed against Sony for the same reason.

It's a shame it comes to this, not because Sony will have to probably dig deep but because class action lawsuits are a scam used by attorneys to generate huge fees at the expense of the victims.  Lawyers will collect millions while those affected will get a pittance out of any settlement.

Given the popularity of the CDs in question and the eagerness with which people jump on lawsuits, I expect this one to be a big class action indeed and if the ruling eventually goes against them (if this even goes to trial, they might settle well before that point is reached) then it's gonna cost Sony.
