Google Print – It’s not about the good of the public, it’s about creating a better index
October 20th, 2005
I think that people are slowly beginning to realize that the motivation behind Google Print is not being benevolent (anyone can be benevolent with other people’s stuff, it’s doing it with your own property that’s the tricky bit), it’s about creating a better, more compelling search index.
Think about it, pretty much everything Google has done in the last year has been to increase buzz and profile and to indelibly stamp the Google name into the cerebral cortex of everyone on the web. They’re given people a free search tool, free unlimited email, free maps of the world, free desktop search tool, free communication program, free WiFi in San Francisco. What’s left to give for free? Oh, I know, other people’s stuff!
I agree with John Battelle, this one's going to the courts and it's going to be messy.
