iPhone … dissected!

Posted By The PC Doctor On 30th June 2007 @ 14:26 In Kit! | No Comments

The guys at [1] AnandTech  have got their hands on an iPhone and rather than play with it, they decided to put it on the operating table and take it apart.

[2]

Some thoughts ...

  • Wow!  Things are tightly packed inside that device.
  • Given that the AnandTech guys had to rip the back off the phone roughly to get into the iphone, it looks like home battery replacements won't be possible (well, not unless you want your iPhone held together with Duct tape).
  • The touchscreen is an incredibly complex bit of kit.

PS3 firmware update time

Posted By The PC Doctor On 29th June 2007 @ 21:28 In PC Doctor's Useful Links | No Comments

Sony has released updated firmware for the PS3 games console.

Firmware version [1] 1.82 adds the following features :

  • Support for playback of AVC High Profile (H.264/MPEG-4) format video has been added. *
    * High image quality encoding method used by Blu-ray Discs and other media
  • Playability status with the PS3™ system has changed for some PlayStation® and PlayStation®2 format titles. To check on the latest status, visit the [2] search site  for compatible titles.

If you're a PS3 console owner and you have games that haven't worked so far then this update might bring you some relief.  Unfortunately, because Sony don't list the games that this new firmware adds support for, you have to either search the database or suck it and see.

eBay tries to prevent iFraud

Posted By The PC Doctor On 29th June 2007 @ 20:52 In PC Doctor's Thoughts | No Comments

The iPhone has been hyped to the point that buyers looking to get an iOrgasm iPhone on eBay need protecting from themselves and potential scammers.  Because of this [1] eBay has put restrictions in place on the sale of iPhones .  Here are the restrictions (my thoughts in italics):

  • Apple iPhone Pre-Sales are prohibited.
Sensible precaution that prevents customers being burned by sellers who can’t deliver on the promise of an iPhone.  Unfortunately, these words alone don’t prevent sales and I can find loads of iPhones for pre-sale.
  • Criteria for Apple iPhone Post-Launch Sales. In order to continue to ensure protection for our Community after these items are made available by the manufacturer, the following requirements have been put in place for the sale of the iPhone:
    - The listing must include a unique photograph of the item or items
    - Your User ID must be clearly displayed within the photograph (watermarks will not be accepted).
    - To ensure buyer protection, PayPal must be the only accepted form of payment
Looks to me like eBay is slowly learning how to prevent the kind of frauds and scams that have previously plagued the site (like people selling empty Xbox 360 boxes for incredible prices).  I’d like to see a fourth sale criteria - a clear photo/scan of a sales receipt.

Unfortunately, some sellers are flouting the rules and no one is enforcing them.  I’ve still managed to find loads of iPhones for pre-sale on eBay.

To be honest, I’d give eBay a wide berth.  Not only is there still a chance of being scammed but prices are likely to be nuts - remember, the person who wins an auction is the one that’s willing to pay the most!

DigiGuide is great!

Posted By The PC Doctor On 28th June 2007 @ 15:09 In PC Doctor's Thoughts | No Comments

Unless you live in the UK, feel free to look away because this doesn't apply to you ...

I don't watch much in the way of TV but there are shows and movies that I will sit down and watch.  In order to better schedule my TV viewing I got a DVR (a digital video recorder) for my birthday (a Sky+ box).  But I've still been looking for a good TV guide that I can use to plan what I want to watch and record.  The Sky subscription allows me access to the channel guide but I find this a pain to navigate and searching for anything is next to impossible.

DigiGuide, the best TV guideThen I came across a service called [1] DigiGuide .  This is described as "the ultimate downloadable desktop PC TV and Radio Guide with support for over 500 UK and Ireland channels including high definition channels."  After having used it for a few days, I agree.  It's fantastic.  It costs £9.99 a year but it's so good that I paid up for a subscription until 2012!  What I like is not only the fact that I can search for programs and movies I want to watch (even actors in programs and movies) but it also shows me detailed program descriptions and I can also set reminders.  I also like the multiple views I can have to the listings and how the program updates itself automatically without needing any user intervention.

To top all that off, I can run a single subscription on up to three PCs!

Excellent program!  [2] I thoroughly recommend it !

Had a blast yesterday!

Posted By The PC Doctor On 28th June 2007 @ 14:27 In Kit! | No Comments

I had a blast yesterday - we spent several enjoyable few hours chucking various cases (from Stormcase, Otterbox, Peli and Seahorse) over a 90ft cliff and capturing the action on video.  It was a great deal of fun and the results were interesting (and spectacular).  We also answer the question "can you throw an egg off a 90ft and have it survive?"

I'll post the results of this test (and a few others) in a couple of days when we've had time to sort through the video and photos!

Fake Microsoft Office security warning email

Posted By The PC Doctor On 28th June 2007 @ 14:18 In Stay Secure | No Comments

Be on the lookout for a [1] fake Microsoft security bulletin email making the rounds :

If you (or someone you know) receives an e-mail about a zero-day exploit affecting Microsoft Outlook do not, under any circumstances, click on the links embedded in the message. It’s a phishing scam folks. The Security Bulletin (MS07-0065) it points to doesn’t exist. And just because it can never be said too often, I’ll say it again here. Microsoft does not alert users to security issues via e-mail. Ever. That’s what Windows Update is for. Details from Sophos are available [2] here .
