10: Blog tip – Keep your blogging software up to date!
August 21st, 2005
You've probably put an awful lot of hard work and effort (not to mention a lot of love) into the development of your blog but this can all be undone in a matter of seconds by a hacker that decides to target your blog and destroy or deface it.
While nothing can 100% guarantee your safety from hacker damage or defacement you can take some simple steps to protect yourself. The first and most obvious is to make and keeping regular backups of your data (do this daily if possible and keep the backup on your PC and not on the web server where they are open to hacker manipulation or where they can be lost if the server goes down!). However, in addition to this you should remember to upgrade to the latest version of whatever blogging tool you use as soon as possible after it has been released. It might seem like a chore but it's important to patch up any security vulnerabilities that might have been discovered between versions. Don't be tempted to put this job on the back burner, while it might not seem to contribute anything to your overall blog it's helping to keeping it safe and secure. Do this as soon as you possibly can as details of vulnerabilities circulate the web quickly (and by looking at the updated code it's easy for a hacker to figure out what the vulnerability with earlier versions is). DO NOT PUT THIS JOB OFF!
Note: There's nothing to do if you are using a blogging service like Blogger or Typepad - they will take care of upgrades for you. HonorTagJournalistHonorTagProfessionalPC DoctorPC DoctorBlogs
