3: Blog tip – You’re going to spend a lot of time talking to yourself in the beginning
August 9th, 2005
A few moths ago an author of a book that I had contributed to came to me looking for ideas to promote his new book (which happened to be his first book).
"Do you blog?" I asked. "No," was the response. So I gave him my 2 minute intro to blogging, along with the benefits and then let him get on with it. However, just before he signed up with Typepad I added "just remember, for a while you're going to feel like you're talking to yourself a lot. Don't worry, just keep doing it and the feeling will soon pass."
Many people who I've spoken to about running sites and blogs remember this point with a blog or web site. The stage is set, the actors are ready but there's no audience. The only way you're going to get an audience is to put on the show. Slowly, people will come in, in ones and twos to begin with but as word spreads of what you're doing, the audience will grow.
If you build it, they will come!
How long does this stage last? It's hard to say. If you have a big ad campaign going then hours or days but if you don't want to spend cash on advertising then expect it to last weeks and possibly months. But eventually, if you keep at it and don't give up, the search engines will eventually come, followed closely by readers.
If you're planning of starting a blog (or web site) and even if you have your sights aimed at A-list fame and stardom right from the start, you're only going to get there by talking to yourself in the beginning!
Have fun!

[...] Adrian Kingsley-Hughes (The PC Doctor) says “The stage is set, the actors are ready but there’s no audience. The only way you’re going to get an audience is to put on the show.” Which I take as meaning - to take the risk, put yourself out there and the comments and interaction will follow but you need to continue and be consistent.
