Chris Pirillo: “Windows Software: Ugly, Boring & Uninspired”
July 4th, 2005
I came across this by Pirillo over on Robert Scoble's blog:
"Software for Windows is generally uninspired, generically cloned, and overwhelmingly wrought with lackluster (read: lousy) user interfaces. There’s too much coal and not enough diamonds within the sphere of downloads."
And on it goes ... "... ... ... Tiger great ... ... ... Windows uninspiring ... ... ... Windows users no sense of belonging ... ... ..."
Heh, heh, heh. Lackluster interfaces, eh? I think that's really meant by that is that every program should come equipped with an unique interface that everyone has to lean in order to be able to drive the program.
I disagree with that idea. Unique interfaces generates as much coal and jsut as fewer diamonds as using "cloned" Windows interfaces. In fact, "mystery meat" navigation has spread from the web into applications. I agree that a poor interface can kill an otherwise good applications but a good interface doesn't make a poor application any better. Yes, some navigation that "breaks the rules" is actually quite intuitive and surprisingly easy to use but there's a whole wasteland of potentially good applications crippled by confusing, hard to understand and navigate interface.
Oh, and by the way, there is a Windows version of PSPWare.
