Software worth having – Acronis True Image 11/True Image Echo Workstation

June 4th, 2008

There's a lot of software available to download for free or to buy, but I'll let you into a little secret - a lot of it is junk. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that a good 80% of the software that's available (both free and commercial) is not worth the bother of downloading, and certainly not worth installing.

Since it can be difficult to separate out the good stuff from the not so good stuff, I thought it would be a good idea if every so often I highlight a piece of software that I think is worth having. Some of the software I feature will be free while other times I'll look at a commercial solution. No matter what I feature, rest assured that it will have been extensively battle tested at the PC Doctor HQ.

Over the years I've tried countless backup solutions, ranging from Windows Backup to proprietary backup utilities such as Norton Ghost. All were a disappointment. Windows Backup is clunky and doesn't offer any decent control over the backup being done, while after using Norton Ghost for a year or so I came to reinstall a system and the restoration process failed catastrophically. Other i tried just weren't up to the job for one reason or another.

Then I came across Acronis True Image.

Acronis True Image comes in two flavors - True Image 11 (free trial) for home and small office users, and True Image Echo Workstation (free trial) for enterprise.

Later I'm going to do a much more detailed post on these products showing how they can be used to protect and recover systems. Here's just a brief rundown of the features on offer by True Image 11:

  • Backup your entire PC - Acronis True Image includes our patented disk imaging backup technology. You can copy your entire PC, including the operating system, applications, user settings, and all data. In the event of a system or disk crash, virus attack or other fatal failures you can restore the entire disk contents in minutes — no reinstallations required!
  • Protect your applications - Use Acronis True Image to restore all the settings for Microsoft Office, iTunes, Media Player and dozens of other most popular applications!
  • New! Try&Decide - Test new software or browse the web in a protected, safe environment. At the end of the session, you decide whether to keep or discard the changes made to your system.
  • Acronis Boot-time Restore - Start working in seconds while your system is still being restored in the background.

I've used Acronis True Image 11 and Echo Workstation extensively here at the PC Doc HQ, both to back up physical machines and to backup virtual machines, and I find the software to be quick, reliable and easy to use.

An all-round excellent backup/restore utility. I thoroughly recommend it!
