Spybot Search and Destroy nukes Tablet PCs
November 6th, 2006
Seems that there's a bug in the antispyware app Spybot Search and Destroy which causes it to detect certain legitimate Tablet PC registry entries as belonging to the malware Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888.
The following registry entries are removed:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon\Notify\TabBtnWL
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon\Notify\Sebring
This removes certain Tablet PC features (specifically the Change tablet and pen settings icon is removed from the tray and Tablet buttons are disabled). The fix is to roll the system back to the previous state using a System Restore point (created automatically by Spybot S&D).
