No tab band in IE7

October 26th, 2006

Thanks for the information about how to get back the Open in New Tab option for the context menu.  But what do you do if the whole tab bar is missing in IE7?

That was a quick follow up!

The first thing that I can tell you is that this problem isn't caused by add-ons.  It's almost always caused by bad installation and can be traced back to one or both of the following files:

  • xmllite.dll
  • ieui.dll

Here's how to troubleshoot problems with these files:

  • Both of these files should live in c:\windows\system32 (assuming you installed Windows into the default folder).  Check to make sure that they are there.  If not, I recommend downloading IE7 again and reinstalling.
  • If both the files are present then they may need to unregister and reinstall the DLL files from the command line.
    - Click Start > Run, type "cmd" (without quotes) and click OK
    - Type the following, pressing ENTER after each line:
    regsvr32.exe /u xmllite.dll
    regsvr32.exe /i xmllite.dll
    regsvr32.exe /u ieui.dll
    regsvr32.exe /i ieui.dll,

    - Reboot and check to see if the problem persists.
  • If that doesn't work, time for some work in Group Policy.
    - Click Start > Run, type "gpedit.msc" (without quotes) and click OK
    - Navigate as follows:
User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Explorer
    - If present double-click on Force Classical View and set this to "Disable".
    - Navigate as follows:
User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Internet Explorer
    - Double-click on Turn off tabbed browsing and set this to "Enabled".
    - Reboot and check again.
  • If that doesn't work, my advice it to reinstall.
