Display ratio woes

August 16th, 2006

My ZDNet blogging colleague George Ou has posted an interesting blog post: Why does that new widescreen HDTV look so weird?

His post is an excellent summary of the issues that surround viewing a standard [tag]4:3[/tag] picture on a wide [tag]16:9[/tag] display or viewing a 16:9 wide image on a standard 4:3 screen.

My feeling is that the black bars are good but distortion is bad, although I see a lot of people's [tag]TV[/tag]s set so that people look either short and stumpy or have elongated heads - that sort of thing gives me a headache!
