Disabling useless XP services – I wouldn’t bother

July 21st, 2006

"What do you think about the advice in this article on disabling Windows XP services?"

I have to be honest and say that I think that the article is far too cavalier about messing with services.  I think that a far more appropriate name for the article would be "Windows services that I got away with disabling" because which services can be safely disabled depends a lot on your circumstances.  Also, disabling services is dangerous - disable the wrong one and you've got some serious headaches awaiting you in the near future.  Even if everything works fine now, that might not be the case a week from now, and by then you might have forgotten what services you disabled by then.

The article also covers disabling services that are useful, such as Security Center and System Restore.  These are useful services.

The real kicker is that they author of the article doesn't tell us how much of a performance gain they got from carrying out all this work.  My bet is that it wasn't much at all, and my advice is that your time would be better spent installing more RAM in your PC or defragging the hard drive than messing about with services.
