Force new instance of Internet Explorer when opening shortcuts

June 3rd, 2005

Don't want the shortcuts and links that you click on not to open in the Internet Explorer window that you're already using for something else? No problems! A simple registry edit can take care of that!

  1. Start - Run, then type Regedit
  2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft
    \Internet Explorer\Main
  3. Edit/create the DWORD called AllowWindowReuse. Set it to 0 to prevent browser reuse (set it back to 1 to reuse an Internet Explorer windows).
  4. No reboot usually needed
