Setting Virtual Memory to System managed size

July 12th, 2006

"I've been told that it's a good idea to make sure that Windows XP is set to have a system managed page file.  How do I check that this is set like this on my system?"

Here's how to check if your virtual memory (also known as swap file or paging file) is set to system managed:

  • Click on Start > Control Panel
  • Click on Performance and Maintenance and then on System
  • Click on the Advanced tab
  • Under Performance, click on the Settings button (there are three, it's the top one!)
  • Click on the Advanced tab (yes, this is another advanced tab)
  • Click on the button labeled Change
  • You'll now see three options:
    - Custom size
    - System managed size
    - No paging file
    Virtual memory
  • You should see the System managed size option selected, if not, select it and click Set followed by OK.  If you don't want to make a change, click Cancel

Be careful about making any drastic changes, and don't set your system to no paging file because it will end up being slower than erosion!
