Justice Dept Data Theft

June 1st, 2005

"The FBI is investigating the theft of a laptop computer containing travel account information for as many as 80,000 Justice Department employees, but it is unclear how much personal data are at risk of falling into the wrong hands."

More stories about data loss and theft. Yawn. I guess that stories about times when data was kept safe and not lost wouldn't make the headlines, however, I'm surprised that we haven't yet come across a story along the lines of "data tapes stolen ... cannot be read because of encryption" or "laptop theft from ... security systems should prevent unauthorized access". Is it that these stories don't get reported or is it that companies that have a robust security policy don't lose data as often?
