I've just now come across a cool utility called Zoomifyer EZ.  This is a free tool that allows you to convert high-res images into an interactive Flash that has zoom and pan.

Actions speak louder than words ... here's a 1.6MB images of a motherboard that's been "Zoomifyed".  Check it out - I think you'll think it's pretty cool!  I think I'll be making quite a bit of use of this tool!
