Take control of the “Send To” context menu

March 2nd, 2006

TipMonkies has a tip on how to totally disable the Windows Send To context menu that appears when you click on files in Windows.  In case you've not noticed this, here's what it looks like:

Send To

The tip they have is a registry hack and it works well (as long as you don't mess the registry up in the process).  However, I find it a somewhat drastic solution - after all, the Send To context menu can be pretty useful.

Rather than disable this, I suggest you take control of it.

Here's how:

  1. Fire up Windows Explorer.
  2. First, you need to show hidden files.  Details on how to do that appear here.
  3. In Windows Explorer navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\[user name]\SendTo
  4. In that folder you'll see most of the entries that appear in your Send To context menu.

  5. Select anything you want to get rid of and press Delete.
  6. Continue until you are satisfied you've eliminated everything you don't want.
  7. Admire your trimmed down, speedier Send To!
