Microsoft makes licensing simpler
October 19th, 2005
Microsoft is to simplify licensing for using it’s Shared Source code down to three:
- Microsoft Permissive License (Ms-PL)
- Microsoft Community License (Ms-CL)
- Microsoft Reference License (Ms-RL)
Not only that, they are going to simplify the language (waffle, legalese, babble …) used in these licenses, making them clearer and easier to understand.
YOWZA! This is going to make things a LOT better – the current system is far too complex and discourages programmers from making use of the code that Microsoft has on offer. Getting to grips with ten difference licenses all packed with legalese was a nightmare and by changing this Microsoft is making the code more accessible while at the same time removing the fuel from suggestions that the licenses were deliberately complex to deter usage of the code.
Well done Microsoft!
