Why are blog search engines, well, rubbish
October 18th, 2005
I’ve just been reading Randy Morin’s post of the RSS blog on the “State of the Splogosphere” and I think he’s hit the nail on the head with this nugget:
Blogging Software
This stuff generally works.
Blogosphere Search Engines
This stuff generally doesn't work.
Yep, seems to sum things up from where I’m sitting. Blog search tools just don’t seem to work very well. OK, I can already hear people say that this stuff is new and that we need to give it time but I can remember a time when Google, Yahoo! and AltaVista was new and exciting and I don’t remember the same sort of issues then. Yes, the blogosphere is expanding rapidly but so is technology and I’m surprised that there’s still isn’t the “one” blog search tool. Spam isn’t helping but Google seems to keep up pretty well with Usenet, considering that that has been spam choked for years now.
I have to admit that I like Technorati but it’s up and down and currently I’m having some problems with it and my emails to the support team have so far gone unanswered. IceRocket is cool but I don’t seem to gel with it as much as I do with Technorati.
Bloglines is, well, still Bloglines.
