Google wants to protect your WiFi traffic

September 20th, 2005

Google, no longer happy with you searching, whats to help you secure your WiFi access using the Google Secure Access Client.

Note: Google Secure Access is a new product that is only available at certain locations in the San Francisco Bay Area.

How does it work? Google Secure Access Client connects you to a Virtual Private Network (VPN). The client encrypts your internet traffic when you send it out over the airwaves and this is then decrypted by the Google server, the requested data downloaded for you by Google (the web page/file/email/etc that you requested), this data is then encrypted and sent to you where it is decrypted on your machine by the client. This means that your internet traffic is encrypted at the points when it is most vulnerable - in the airwaves and on the net.

This service is free and beta so remember that you get what you pay for and there could be some serious bugs! After the problems that Google had with the Web Accelerator tool (and these were some very basic problems that really should have been seen way before it rolled out even as a beta) I'd suggest care and caution in using this tool. Others are feeling the exact same way.

There's a ton of information in the FAQ that Google have compiled.

How long until we have a Google badged PC?
