More thoughts on Google Blog Search
September 14th, 2005
OK, the more you use something, the more you notice the kinks ... overall I still like Google Blog Search - it's fast and it's easy to use. Also, it seems to index posts very quickly indeed (under an hour from what I can tell). The RSS subscription facility is also ace - top marks Google!
The downsides ... well, there's spam blogs and spam comments appearing in there already, something that I've not seen on Memeorandum. Spam could be the problem with the Google system unless they work hard and fast to get it under control.
Another thing I've noticed is that currently the pool of blogs that it searches is quite small. OK, larger than Memeorandum but pretty small on the whole. I wonder if they have some ranking system in place or whether the database is currently not complete.
I've noticed that Darren Rowse of ProBlogger has also commented on most of what I've said above. He also wonders what affect this might have of blog listings in the main Google index and whether they will drop in importance at some point in the future. I wonder about that too, but I would think that what is more likely is a scheme where you can omit blogs in advanced searches. But all this is well into crystal ball territory and comes under "wait and see".
